Critical Incident Debriefing

Would you know what to do?

Our workplaces can be rewarding environments that encourage motivation and grow a culture of innovation and creativity. However, when critical incidents occur, our workplaces can shift dramatically, as employees and workers manage their feelings in the aftermath.

As an employer, you have a key role to play in helping employees recover from a critical incident that occurs in the workplace. We can help.

  • A critical incident can include:

    >> Sudden loss of a colleague

    >> Accidental death

    >> Violence or attempted violence

    >> Robbery

    >> Suicide

    >> Natural Disaster

    >> Termination of employment (mass lay-offs)

  • Critical Incident Debriefings (CID) are an essential tool that assist workforces in critical incident management.

This process equips everyone in the workplace with the tools needed to move forward in the ‘healthiest’ way possible following a critical incident.

The ultimate goal is to allow employees to return to regular life with a renewed sense of emotional stamina and reduced stress.

  • Critical incidents are highly stressful events that have the potential to overwhelm an individual's usual coping abilities.

The symptoms that employees may be experiencing after a critical incident may be difficult for managers to support.

If a critical incident occurs in the workplace and no intervention or support is provided to employees, this will lead to poor recovery outcomes, increase absenteeism, disability leave frequency, and will result in high turnover rates.

When Critical Incident Debriefings are incorporated into the aftermath of an incident, a culture of recovery, wellness, and resiliency is created.

  • Employees can demonstrate a wide variety of symptoms after experiencing a workplace critical incident.

    These could include:

    Exhaustion

    Reduced attention span

    Sudden absenteeism

    Chest pain

    Headaches

    Fainting/dizziness

    Loss of confidence

    Negative self-talk

    Decreased awareness

Strong need for recognition of what they experienced

    Anxiety

    Decreased productivity

    Frustration

    Anger

    Irritability

    Emotional outbursts

    Anti-social behaviour/withdrawal

    Increase in substance use (alcohol/drugs)
